❄️Winter Access & Snow Safety40+ ft/yr snow
❄️ Crater Lake gets some of the heaviest snowfall of any US national park — 40+ feet per year on average. The North Entrance Road and the full 33-mile Rim Drive close for winter, typically from late October to mid/late June, reopening in stages as plowing allows. Highway 62 / Munson Valley Road to Rim Village stays open and plowed year-round, weather permitting, but tire chains are often required. NPS road status ↗

🚧Lake Access & Boat ToursClosed thru 2028
🚧 Cleetwood Cove Trail — the only legal way down to the lake shore — is closed for rockfall-mitigation and marina rehabilitation through the 2026, 2027, and 2028 summer seasons, with reopening expected around 2029. Boat tours and the Wizard Island shuttle (currently operated by ExplorUS/Explor Crater Lake) are suspended for the same period. Rim Drive scenic trolley tours (a separate operator, Crater Lake Trolley) are unaffected and still run in summer. NPS project details ↗

🌙Stargazing & Night SkyPending certification
Loading…
Crater Lake is pursuing International Dark Sky Park certification (not yet certified as of this writing) and has been informally ranked among the best US national parks for stargazing by third-party studies, thanks to its high elevation and distance from major light pollution. Best on new-moon nights from Rim Drive overlooks — bring a red flashlight to preserve night vision and dress warm, as high-elevation nights get cold fast even in summer. NPS night sky info ↗

🏪 In-park dining and retail are operated by ExplorUS (Explor Crater Lake), the park's concessioner as of 2024 — not Xanterra, which ran things until 2018, or Aramark, which held the contract 2018–2024.
