🐻Grizzly Country & Road SafetyBear spray required
🐻 Glacier is prime grizzly and black bear habitat — carry bear spray, know how to use it, and make noise on trails, especially near streams or in low-visibility brush. Trails close temporarily and without notice when bear activity is reported, so check current conditions before you hike. Going-to-the-Sun Road is a narrow alpine highway with hairpin turns and no guardrails in places — vehicles/combinations over 21 ft long, 8 ft wide, or 10 ft high are prohibited on the Avalanche Creek–Sun Point section. 🪧Park Entrance & Going-to-the-Sun RoadOpen · check dates
Main Access Open 24/7, 365 Days
West Glacier (Hwy 2) & St. Mary (Hwy 89)
Glacier is open year-round with no closing time — even when entrance stations aren't staffed, self-registration pay stations are available.
💡 Nearest airports are Kalispell (west side) and Great Falls (east side).

Going-to-the-Sun Road Highly Seasonal
Full alpine crossing, typically late June – mid-October
This 50-mile road over Logan Pass is one of the last to fully open each year — snowpack determines the date, sometimes not until July. It's usually the first major road to close each fall.
💡 Always check current status before planning a full crossing — the alpine section can close for weather even mid-summer.

Vehicle Reservations Ticketed Entry (Peak Season)
Going-to-the-Sun Rd & North Fork, summer
During peak summer, some corridors require a vehicle reservation in addition to your entrance pass. Check current-year requirements before you go — they vary by corridor and month.
💡 A valid campground or lodging reservation inside the ticketed corridor typically exempts you from needing a separate vehicle reservation.

Glacier's remote location and high elevation make for some of the darkest skies in the Lower 48 — the St. Mary area is home to the park's Dusty Star Observatory, and rangers host astronomy programs there in summer. Best on new-moon nights, away from West Glacier's lights. Bring warm layers even in July — mountain nights drop fast. NPS night sky info ↗
