⚠️Extreme Conditions & SafetyFlash flood risk
🌊 NPS's own warning: "Flash flooding — water can rise as fast as 4 feet in 10 minutes resulting in people washed out to sea and drowning." At the Kīpahulu coast, "entry and wading in the streams is not recommended." At the summit, temperatures swing from 40–70°F by day to 30–50°F at night, and storms can bring winds over 80 mph with freezing temperatures. There is no cell phone service in the crater, and medical help can take up to an hour to arrive. NPS safety info ↗

🌱The Haleakalā SilverswordFound nowhere else
🌱 NPS: "The silvery hairs, fleshy leaves, and low-growing rosette form of the Haleakalā silversword allow it to survive in hot, dry climates like the aeolian desert cinder slopes of the crater." Plants live 3–90+ years, then flower once in a spectacular stalk before dying — "scattering drying seeds to the wind." Park staff fence out ungulates and ask visitors to stay on trails to protect fragile seedlings and root systems. This subspecies is federally listed as a threatened species. NPS silversword info ↗
🌙Stargazing & Night SkyNot certified
Loading…
Haleakalā is not a certified Dark Sky Park, but NPS describes conditions as pristine: "due to its high elevation, the atmosphere is often clearer and light pollution is minimal, allowing for ideal viewing conditions." The summit hosts real astronomical observatories, taking advantage of the same clear, high-altitude air that makes sunrise-above-the-clouds famous. NPS stargazing info ↗
