🔥Hurricane Ridge — Current ConditionsFire restrictions active
🔥 The Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center and Day Lodge burned down on May 7, 2023 and, as of this writing, has not been rebuilt — an $80M reconstruction funded via congressional disaster relief has stalled with no confirmed construction progress. Currently only temporary trailers are on site (restrooms and a basic visitor contact station) — no indoor facilities or food service at Hurricane Ridge. In addition, winter access to Hurricane Ridge Road is restricted to Friday–Sunday and select holidays, 9am–4pm, tire chains required, subject to closure for storms or avalanche risk. NPS current conditions ↗
🚫 Campfire restrictions are currently in effect (since late June 2026) across Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest due to dry conditions and high fire danger — campfires are allowed only in established fire rings in developed campgrounds; all backcountry, dispersed, and beach campfires are prohibited. Propane/gas stoves are still permitted. NPS fire conditions ↗

Mountains Hurricane Ridge
Alpine views & subalpine meadows
Reached via Hurricane Ridge Road from Port Angeles. See the current-conditions notice above before planning a visit here — facilities are limited right now.
💡 Weekend-only winter access (Fri–Sun, 9am–4pm) — check road status first.

Rainforest Hoh & Sol Duc
Temperate rainforest valleys
Hoh Rain Forest and Sol Duc areas, each with their own ranger station and trailheads — among the wettest places in the continental US.
💡 Hoh Rain Forest gets ~140–170+ inches of rain a year — pack for wet weather any season.

Coast Kalaloch
Wild Pacific coastline
Kalaloch and the coastal strip — beaches, tide pools, and driftwood-strewn shoreline, a completely different world from the mountains and rainforest.
💡 Check tide tables before beach hikes — some routes are impassable at high tide.

River Conditions4 live gauges
The Elwha River is the site of the largest dam-removal and river-restoration project in US history (completed ~2014) — salmon runs and the river's natural sediment flow have been recovering ever since.

Olympic has no official Dark Sky Park certification, but offers excellent unofficial dark-sky conditions (Bortle Class ~2 in places) thanks to its remoteness. Free public astronomy programs run seasonally at Hurricane Ridge. Best on new-moon nights — bring a red flashlight to preserve night vision and dress warm, coastal and mountain nights get cold fast.
