⚠️Geothermal & Wildlife SafetyThermal + wildlife risk
♨️ Stay on boardwalks and marked trails in all thermal areas. The ground can look solid but be only a thin crust over near-boiling water — more than 20 people have died from thermal burns in Yellowstone's history, and off-trail travel or swimming in hot springs is illegal. NPS thermal safety info ↗
🦬 Bison injure more visitors in Yellowstone than any other animal — they can run 3x faster than a human and appear calm right before charging. Stay at least 25 yards from bison and elk, and 100 yards from bears, wolves & cougars. Yellowstone is grizzly country — carry bear spray, know how to use it, and hike in groups of 3+. 🌙Stargazing & Night SkyNot certified
Loading…
Yellowstone has not been formally certified as an International Dark-Sky Association Dark Sky Park — the park is pursuing certification but an inventory found thousands of non-compliant light fixtures still to be addressed. That said, remote areas like Lamar Valley and the Lake area reach Bortle Class 1–2 skies among the darkest in the Lower 48. Best on new-moon nights, away from Old Faithful/Canyon area lighting.
