🥵Extreme Heat Danger — Inner CanyonFatalities in 2026
🌡️ Multiple hikers have died from heat-related illness in June 2026 on Bright Angel, South Kaibab, and North Kaibab trails. Inner-canyon temperatures run 20–25°F hotter than the rim — a pleasant 80°F at the rim can mean 105°F+ at the river. Do not hike below the rim between 10am and 4pm during excessive heat warnings. Rim-to-river-and-back in one day kills hikers every year — the climb out is far harder than the descent, and heat illness symptoms can appear suddenly on the return. NPS hike-smart guidance ↗
🔥North Rim Recovery StatusReopened May 15
🔥 The 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire burned over 145,000 acres and destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and ~114 other structures. The North Rim reopened for the 2026 season on May 15 under a "we will open what we can, where we can" approach — all paved roads (Hwy 67, Cape Royal Road, Point Imperial Road) are open, and the full North Kaibab Trail is open on foot only (stock use suspended for 2026). Services remain limited: no potable water in the developed area — bring your own. Live North Rim status page ↗
