⚠️Black Bear & Trail SafetyFrequent sightings
🐻 Black bears are the park's top-billed safety topic — NPS's guidance is to stay at least 150 feet (about four bus-lengths) away from any bear, never approach for a photo, and store food properly. The second major theme is slips and falls on wet waterfall rocks — never walk on top of a waterfall. Deer, bear, and wild turkey regularly dart across Skyline Drive without warning, so watch your speed. Ticks are also an increasing concern — check yourself after every hike. NPS safety info ↗

Shenandoah does not hold a formal Dark Sky designation, given its proximity to the DC metro area — but on clear moonless nights NPS notes roughly 2,500 visible stars from spots like Big Meadows. The park has run an annual Night Sky Festival since 2016 with ranger-led programs. NPS night sky info ↗
